ADD a PRODUCT

Look at the 'Cheat sheet' on the left, first: If it makes sense to you, you don't need to read through all of this.

Step By Step.

An example for adding a Product into Admin

1.  Admin Logs into admin
System shows admin home (index) page

2. User mouses over: Catalog
System shows Catalog drop down menu

3. User selects Categories / Products option
System shows list of existing categories

4. User selects a category
System shows list of products in that category

5. User visually identifies a product and then clicks on the [c] symbol and the right hand end of that products       line in the table.

System shows the 'copy product' dialog: this includes name of currently selected product, name of currently   selected category, pick list of categories to allow the user to select which category the copy will be placed in and two radio buttons labeled copy method: options link / duplicate, then an option that only applies to duplicate products: two radio buttons labeled: copy product attributes to duplicate: y / n

6. User selects 'duplicate' radio button, leaves the category unchanged and selects the no radio button for   'attributes'. Then presses the button [copy]

System creates a duplicate copy of the selected product in the selected category, closes the 'copy dialog'.  The new product is now listed beneath the old product by the same name. Although the product status is 'red' which means that it is off ie not shown on the public site.

7. User clicks on the 'new product' button at the bottom of the list of products
System opens a 'new product' form.

8. User fills out the form: selecting 'in stock', product manufacturer name from pick list, types in a product name, selects a tax class, selects the radio button labeld: 'Yes, Show Quantity Box',  types in a product description using html tags,  selects a product image,  enters product weight, selects a supplier name, enters  shipping dims and weights, wholesale price, markup and shipping price. then presses preview button

    System shows confirmation page

9. User presses update button

System ads product to both the list of products in the selected category on admin, and also into the list of   products, in the selected category on the live site.

Add a Product

These videos will show you how to add a new product in the custom Zen cart interface for ModernFurnitureClassics (and the rest of the Furniture Collection web sites).

Before creating a new product please take a moment to check carefully that this product does not already exist on the site. It may just be turned off - please take care not to duplicate products.

Also please make sure that you are adding the product to the correct site.. we have several sites and each product is usually uniquely suited to only one of them.

Required fields:

All new products must have:

  • A product name - this is either designated by the manufacturer or you have to make it up. If in doubt use short propper nouns: People's names, Place names, Plant names. If you run out of English names, try Italian or French.
  • A 'Product Manufacturer' and a 'Supplier' Name: Generally the same, these two pick lists are at the top of the form and in the middle of the form. Failure to select these properly will break the site.
  • A tax zone selected - for products being added to modernfurnitureclassics.com - taz zone is always 'CA tax', for products being added to chicmodern.co.uk - tax zone is always 'British UK tax'. Tax zone for all other sites is the same as that for modernfurnitureclassics.com
  • Show Quantity: Please select the radio button that says 'Show quantity' box
  • Dimensions: All products must have product dimensions. Product dims are in inches for all sites except chicmodern.co.uk. For this site they are generally in 'cm'. Please think reasonably about what the likely dimensions are  - don't just input what you think might be the dimensions - based on your interpretation of the product details spec sheets etc. Please USE LOGIC!
  • Weights: Whether for product or shipping weight - please remember to select 'lbs' for weights on all sites except chicmodern.co.uk, and 'kg' for weights on chicmodern.co.uk. Failure to include shipping weight of the product (each package where appropriate) will break the site.
  • Shipping dimensions: Shipped dimensions are the dimensions of the product packaged for shipment. Some products come in multiple packages. In this case each package will have separate dimensions and weights.  Note that some products like dining tables and beds ship disassembled, other products ship in one piece, rugs ship rolled up. Please THINK about what the likely shipping dimensions would be based on the 'product dimensions'. If the manufacturer does not supply shipping dims you will have to guess sensibly. eg rugs rolled for shipment will be width: (the shortest edge), and height and depth according to your estimate of how big a rolled rug will be eg. 16  - 18 inches.
  • A primary image: The primary image is always 300px wide x 255px tall. It is always a JPG. It should never have any spaces in the file name. It should never have any characters other than numbers or letters. If any of these factors are incorrect YOU WILL BREAK THE SITE.
  • Alternate images: Each product may have 'alternate' images. These images are generally other views of the same product, or the same product in other colors. Alternate images MUST have the same name as the primary image followed by 'alt_1' or 'alt_2' or 'alt_3'. there is only space for 3 alt images. Please do not try to add more than that. The size and format of the alternate images is the same as for the primary image.
  • Large image: Each primary and each alternate image generally has a 18pt version of the same image also. These vary in size but are always jpgs. the same rules apply about no spaces in image names etc. Large images are always named as follows: primaryImageName_Lg,jpg or alternateImageName_Lg.jpg. Please make sure that they are named correctly before uploading them or they will not be found by the system.
  • Product Description: All products have a product description with HTML markup tags. The description itself has three elements: 'Availabilty', 'Description', 'Materials'. The description text is always structured as follows:<p><b>Availability: </b>Please allow <time frame> for delivery.</p><p><b>Description: </b>Price includes 1 (sometimes more than 1) <type of product eg Chair>. Sometimes there will be a longer product description in the manufacturer's details. You can add that here. Please check for Logic, English and Grammer when you do so.</p> <p><b>Materials: </b><List mateials may be long form or bulleted></p>
  • Model Number: All products must have a model number and all model numbers have a prefix based on the manufacturer name. If you are adding products for a manufacturer that is already in the database, please find other products by the same manufacturer / supplier and make sure that you are using the same model number prefix. Model numbers themselves come from the product price lists / spec sheets or catalogs as provided. Model numbers sometimes change based on the finish or size of the product, and some products occasionally have no model numbers at all. If you are not sure which number to use.. PLEASE ASK do not guess. Mistakes cost money. If you have checked and double checked and found that there really is no model number then you can use the product name - don't forget to include the prefix.
  • NMF class code: All products MUST have a NMF Class. Please use the same class code as you find already existing in the system, for products of the same type. ie if you are inputing details for a chair use the class code for another chair.
  • Supplier Currency: For all sites except chicModern.co.uk the supplier currency is UD dollars. For ChicModern.co.uk, the supplier currency is either Euros or British pounds. Please check on the manufacturer price list for which it is.
  • Supplier Price: This is the 'wholesale price' sometimes called the 'trade price' or 'stocking price'.  (NOT designer price). Most price lists will provide you with the wholesale price for each item.. and if that is the case you just put it in here. Some price lists have only Retail prices though, and require than you calculate the wholesale price by applying some discount to the retail price. An example of a discount might be -50 -10. This would require that you start with the retail price and divide by 2 and then subtract another 10% (you could do this by multiply by 0.9 for example).
  • To select from multiple versions of the same product name in the price list: Look at the sizes of the products available, select the one that looks most like the product in the photo. Then we will come back to this product after the others are all added and add the other listed size options in the 'attributes section'
  • Markup Currency: is always US dollars
  • Markup Type: is always 'percentage'
  • Markup Amount: is 50% unless otherwise specified.
  • Shipping Markup Currency: is always in US dollars
  • Shipping Markup: also known as 'built in shipping' For products on Modern Furniture Classics.com (and all sites except chicmodern.co.uk) - the Built in shipping will be the same as the 'standard US consignment shipping' amount. For products on Chic modern - the built in shipping will be the same as the 'Europe' consignment shipping amount
  • http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pYJcOyuHXBQJeuQH2GMmHeg&output=html
  • Consignment shipping: Price type is always 'fixed dollars', price value dollar amount can be found in the google doc entitled 'Consignment Shipping'. All US zones except NY, FL and Canada should use the 'USA standard' pricing from this spreadsheet. Pricing for FL, NY and Canada - from the column so named. Get prices for Europe from the Europe column and prices for the 'Everywhere else' field from the 'Everywhere else' column of the spreadsheet.

  • You will be editing products in this manner, on 5 different web sites
    • http://www.modernfurnitureclassics.com
    • http://www.chicmodern.co.uk
  • The admin site for each of these is the primary domain as shown above followed by /admin so for example: http://www.modernfurnitureclassics.com/admin
  • Once the products are posted. You will need to go to the live site to review / test the data you have entered. Each product should display:
    • a primary image - if it looks strange it is because it is displaying the 18pt image instead of the primary image. you will need to reupload the primary image making sure that it is indeed 300px wide by 255px tall.
    • a description that includes: Availability, Details and Materials
    • Alternative images (if they were provided to you) - again if these look warped or unclear it is because the wrong image is displayed.
    • Working links to the 18pt images associated with both primary and alt images
    • Price - please look at these with a logical mind. If they seem illogical they are probably wrong or entered in the wrong currency and need to be changed.
    • Dimensions - please look at these with a logical mind. If they seem illogical they are probably wrong or using the wrong unit of measurement and need to be changed.
    • Color or size options (if they were provided to you) - these should include the apropriate markup on roll over.
    • Weights (if they were provided to you) If they seem illogical they are probably wrong or using the wrong unit of measurement and need to be changed.
